2,700-Bed Student Housing North Complex
San Luis Obispo, California
Cal Poly's Master Plan (adopted in March 2001) calls for the construction of residential communities to more than double housing available for students living on campus. The Student Housing North Complex will be the largest single construction project in the history of the CSU system at $299 million in bonds. This 2,700-bed housing complex will include three residential neighborhood areas on 30 acres north of Brizzolara Creek. The size of this project offers Cal Poly a unique opportunity to create a twenty-first century living and learning community. Its program components and physical design can embody the key values of the Cal Poly Master Plan, particularly with respect to establishing an atmosphere that is student-centered, stimulating, socially supportive and environmentally responsible. The complex includes two parking structures totaling 1,900 parking spaces, commercial areas with retail and food service space as well as a recreation center with a swimming pool. The apartment units will offer full kitchens, laundry areas, study areas, utilities including high-speed internet access. The design team, headed by Clark Construction, was awarded this project as the result of a design/build competition. Cannon Associates was chosen to provide civil engineering services for the project. The scope of work includes the preparation of grading, drainage, improvement, and on-and off-site utility plans. Cannon Associates will also assist with environmental permitting and achieving LEED certification for the complex. The project is scheduled to begin in late fall 2005 and will open in two phases beginning in 2008.

Cal Poly Student Housing Project
San Luis Obispo, California
With hundreds of new students on the California Polytechnic State University campus each year, this 200-room/800-bed student housing facility was in high demand. Constructing 29 buildings and a commons building on a steep hillside in San Luis Obispo created design challenges. The final design incorporated the surrounding natural landscape with stepped foundations and retaining walls to minimize site disturbance. Cannon Associates was selected to provide civil and structural engineering, surveying, and permitting services to the project architect. The scope of work included plans, specifications, and cost estimates for grading, drainage, an on-site storm water detention basin, hot and cold water systems for heating and cooling, plans and specifications for street improvements; including parking along the street, curb, and gutter, and plans specifications and calculations for twelve foot headwalls needed to support the street improvements. Additionally, Cannon Associates prepared structural design for stepped foundations and retaining walls to mitigate the site’s steep terrain; along with designs of concrete abutments for a 32-foot by 6-foot concrete and steel pedestrian bridge; a topographic survey; and permit processing and coordination with Army Corps, Fish & Game, and RWQCB. The project was completed in 2003.
University Sports Complex, California Polytechnic State University
San Luis Obispo, California
Cannon Associates provided engineering design and surveying services for the construction of a new $9 million, 47-acre sports complex at California Polytechnic State University. The complex contains a baseball stadium and softball stadium, playing fields for intramural sports, concession areas, restrooms and parking. Site planning included a NCAA football stadium and field house, which have not been built. Cannon Associates was responsible for preliminary site planning and preparing and specifications for grading, sewer, water and storm drain systems, utilities, street improvements and parking. Cannon Associates also provided surveying services including aerial, topographic and boundary surveys.
Davidson Library Boiler Replacement
UCSB, Santa Barbara, California
The Davidson Library at UCSB was in need of new boilers and associated pumps and piping. The boilers heat the two-story section (Library 4) and the four-story section (Libraries 1 and 2). The existing boilers had been in use since 1977. UCSB selected Cannon Associates to provide the engineering services for the HVAC design and construction administration/observation. The scope of work for this project included preparation of plans, specifications, and opinions of probable cost and timeline for the replacement of the existing Cleaver Brooks hot water boilers (two), Weinman double suction circulating pumps (three), vent stack (one), and associated circulation piping. It also included preparation of heat load calculation to size the new units. Cannon Associates also provided construction administration on a weekly basis.
Kermit King Elementary School
Paso Robles, California
Kermit King Elementary School is located among the rolling hills and bountiful vineyards of Paso Robles, California. Set on a bluff adjacent to the Salinas River, this K-5 elementary school provides an educational facility for more than 450 north county youth. This new school site consists of seven buildings (approximately 20,000 square feet), three baseball fields, and two football/soccer fields on 10 acres. It is located immediately west of the Cuesta College North County Campus site. Cannon Associates was selected to provide civil engineering, planning, and surveying for the project. The scope of work included the preparations of plans, specifications and estimates of probable costs for grading, drainage, sewer, water, and storm drain systems, street improvements for all interior street, parking lots and utilities. Cannon Associates also prepared the boundary and topographic surveys, and construction surveys.
