'Loose Cannons' Competing in Mojave Death Race
    July 17, 2004

'Loose Cannons' Competing in Mojave Death Race July 17 SAN LUIS OBISPO - Two years ago, employees at Cannon Associates took team building to an extreme level by participating in the Mojave Death Race. Now, they are back at it. With less than a month to go, the group of Cannon Associates employees, which has given themselves the name "Loose Cannons" are at their peak of training: weekly bike trips up Serra San Luis, road riding around the county, and long distance running throughout the coast.

Having participated in the event two years ago, the Loose Cannons know what they are in for and take the challenge seriously. As it says on the event's web site: "If you and your teammates are not up to an Adventurous & Hazardous Endurance Team Challenge then go to (a) beach race and collect seashells."

The July 17 Mojave Death Race is a 12-person team relay event featuring a combined race for runners, mountain bicyclists and road bicyclists across a 287-mile course in the Mojave Desert of Southern California and Southwestern Nevada. The Race is run relay style in 21 legs from 6 miles to 42 miles and continues throughout the day and night until the race is finished. The start and finish line is behind Buffalo Bill's Casino and Hotel at Primm, Nev., 30 miles from Las Vegas.

"The event two years was such an exhilarating experience. The challenge really brought our group together. We've got associates from both our San Luis Obispo office and Bakersfield office on the team. We're looking forward to competing in this years race." said Liz Jaeger, one of 25 Loose Cannons team members.

The team has tried to mimic the race's conditions while training. Terrain ranges from soft desert sand to hard packed dirt, paved roads and dirt roads, rocks, gravel, weathered asphalt and what the race organizers refer to as "all kinds of ugly stuff."

Several local businesses are supporting the Loose Cannons effort this year: Logo Motion, Nielsen Benefits Group, Webeclectic, Arts Cyclery, Commworld of Bakersfield, Cowboy Cookie N' Grub, JCarroll, Scarab Graphics Solutions, Total Financial Solutions, Wells Fargo - San Luis Obispo Branch, and Zweig-White Consulting.

Cannon Associates is an engineering, planning, and surveying firm with offices in San Luis Obispo and Bakersfield.
