Cannon Associates Redesigns San Luis Obispo Intersection
    May 20, 2007

Cannon Associates Redesigns San Luis Obispo Intersection SAN LUIS OBISPO – The City of San Luis Obispo intends to design and construct the realignment of the intersection of Buena Vista & Garfield at Monterey. Cannon Associates will provide landscape architecture, civil engineering, and surveying for this project. The scope of work includes an initial site analysis, design and preparation of construction documents, right-of-way easement identification and construction management.

This intersection of Buena Vista and Garfield at Monterey is highly visible to arriving visitors from the north as the main north end portal into the City San Luis Obispo. In addition, the existing intersection has been identified as a high collision rate intersection with limited pedestrian accessibility. Safety for pedestrians and bicyclists will be a priority in the design of this realignment. Potential design amenities include a well-lit walkway with monument signage, outdoor eating area and seating. The desire is to create a more park-like atmosphere where cyclists can stop and break, pedestrians can wait for the trolly, and visitors can exit the freeway to rest.

“This is a great project. We will build upon the character and spirit of the downtown area and create an elegant entrance to our City,” said Mike Cannon, President of Cannon Associates.

City of Paso Robles Awards Vine Street Project to Cannon Associates
    May 1, 2007

City of Paso Robles Awards Vine Street Project to Cannon Associates The City of Paso Robles selected Cannon Associates to design the ultimate improvements to South Vine Street, the southern entrance and exit path of the City. Cannon Associates will provide the design options to create an elegant entrance to the City.

This project requires a collaboration of disciplines including landscape architecture, civil, survey, structural, and planning. The scope of work includes conceptual road improvement plans, a preliminary design report, exhibits, and an opinion of probable cost. The improvements include two-lanes, a multi-use trail on the West side, as well as curb, gutter, and sidewalk. The design options will incorporate the natural scenery and native vegetation and will include amenities such as an interpretive ‘wine theme’ walk, a kiosk-rest area, benches/seating area, a picnic area, and a 2-mile multi-use pedestrian trail.

Steep slopes and the adjacent Highway 101 corridor make this roadway project complex. The design solution will require creativity to fit more roadway into the existing right-of-way and to determine how or where to widen the road.

"This project is more than just a road widening or bike path. The City has the opportunity to make a spectacular visual impact as well as create a landmark for the community." said Terry Lee, Senior Landscape Architect of Cannon Associates.

Vine Street has everything for which the City of Paso Robles is known: rolling hills, majestic oak trees, and lovingly restored Victorian neighborhoods. In addition to being the southern entrance to the City, this corridor is an integral part of the community’s thoroughfare.

Cannon Receives CELSOC's 2007 Engeering Excellence Award
    December 4, 2006

2007 Engineering Excellence Awarded to Cannon Associates San Luis Obispo, California – Cannon Associates receives recognition from CELSOC for providing engineering excellence on the Vapor Recovery System project for Macpherson Oil Company.

Cannon Associates worked with Macpherson Oil Company to upgrade the Casing and Tank Vapor Recovery systems at the Round Mountain Oilfield in Kern County, California. The team successfully implemented a solution that met the stringent requirements for Title V of the Clean Air Act of 1990, while significantly decreasing the backpressure on oil producing wells, thereby increasing oil production. This project significantly improved the operational reliability of the compressor and enhanced the performance of the associated vapor recovery system resulting in a potential 500 barrels per day increase in oil production. Operational reliability of this system has also improved vapor recovery system compliance with emission control requirements mitigating potential for non-compliance violations and associated fines. Since its implementation, this project has improved the reliability of emissions control systems while helping increase field oil production.

CELSOC is a 50-year-old, nonprofit association of private consulting engineering and land surveying firms. Criteria in decision making included technical value to the engineering profession, original or innovative application of new or existing techniques, social and economic considerations, complexity, and meeting or exceeding owner/client needs.

Cannon Has the Power to Make a Difference
    October 10, 2006

Cannon Has the Power to Make a Difference Cannon Has the Power to Make a Difference Cannon Has the Power to Make a Difference AVILA BEACH –Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) selected Cannon Associates to provide consulting services for the ISFSI project; which provides safe storage of used nuclear fuel.

PG&E’s Diablo Canyon Power Plant, located in San Luis Obispo County, provides electricity for more than 2 million Northern and Central Californians from its two 1,100 megawatt units. Since the beginning of commercial operation in 1985, Diablo Canyon has been one of the safest and most efficient nuclear power plants in the nation.

While Diablo Canyon was being designed and constructed (1970/80), the federal government was working to build a permanent national storage facility to handle the used fuel from all of the nation's nuclear power plants. Thirty years later, the federal government is still working on locating and designing that permanent site. Like many other utilities across the nation, PG&E must store Diablo Canyon's used nuclear fuel until a national storage site is open. PG&E believes dry storage of used fuel is the preferred option because it offers a longer-term storage solution pending the federal government’s construction of a permanent national used fuel storage facility.

Cannon Associates provided engineering, surveying, and permitting for facilitating the transport of 180-ton spent nuclear fuel rod casks from reactor building area to storage pad in the nearby canyon. The scope of work included road design, utility and drainage realignments, retaining walls, construction staking, permitting, coordination with San Luis Obispo County Building and Safety Division, and a fire water protection system for the ISFSI.

Diablo Canyon is the third nuclear power plant in California to construct an interim used fuel storage facility. San Onofre and Rancho Seco have already loaded fuel into their storage facilities. In the event a national repository for used nuclear fuel is not available this phased project would allow for onsite storage of all of the used fuel generated by the plant.

    Cannon Knows the Drill
    September 8, 2006

Cannon Knows the Drill Cannon Knows the Drill Cannon Knows the Drill San Luis Obispo, CA – More than 50 engineering professionals attended the Trenchless Technology Seminar hosted by the San Luis Obispo Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers on August 24, 2006. The seminar covered Trenchless Pipeline, Manhole Rehabilitation, and Trenchless Installation of New/Replacement Pipeline. Through panel discussions, presentations, and project examples, the attendees learned about horizontal directional drilling, pipe bursting, open trench and jack and bore.

Larry Kraemer and Brien Vierra, of Cannon Associates, discussed the Highway 135 Jack & Bore and the Templeton Interceptor Line Sewer Reach Project. The Highway 135 Project design included the use of a trenchless jack and bore technology. By using this technology, sandy soil and insufficient lay down area were not issues. In addition, the team was able to install a 24-inch steel casing with a 12-inch diameter waterline transmission main under Highway 135 without having to close down the highway. The Templeton Interceptor Line Sewer Reach Project involved replacing approximately two miles of aging 12-inch VCP sewer and increasing capacity for future expansion. The design included the use of a trenchless pipe bursting technology and helped prepare the City of Paso Robles for an ultimate build-out service area. The project consisted of over 10,000 lineal feet of new 18-inch to 22-inch sewer mains and a 2.2 MGD triple-pump sewer lift station.

    June 27, 2006

Cannon Associates Take Team Building to Extreme Levels SAN LUIS OBISPO – Today’s business place is fast-paced and busy. That’s why the employees at Cannon Associates (a.k.a. Loose Cannons) foster team building. In the past, the Loose Cannons have taken team building to a whole new level by participating in Mojave Death Race. This year, the group set their sights on hiking Half-Dome in Yosemite.

On June 10, 90 Loose Cannon friends, family and colleagues ventured to conquer the Dome. The hike to the summit of Half Dome was approximately 17 miles round trip; and can take anywhere from 10-12 hours. The route included the appropriately named ‘Mist Trail,’ stemming from the spray of the waterfalls which soak hikers; continuing on to a series of steep switchbacks and then the infamous cables running the last quarter of a mile to the top of the Dome.

“Hiking Half-Dome was an amazing experience. Finishing the cables to the top and seeing the whole Loose Cannons group was incredible. This event was a great way to get to know colleagues, as well as their friends and family, outside of the office environment. The challenge really brought our group together. Associates from both our San Luis Obispo office and Bakersfield office made the trek,” commented Liz Jaeger, Marketing Director at Cannon Associates.

Cannon Associates is an engineering, planning, and surveying firm with offices in San Luis Obispo and Bakersfield.

--> Central Coast Cannon Associates Thunders to Top Award!
Wins Public Works Project of the Year for Thunderbird Waterline Wells project
    May 25, 2005

Central Coast Cannon Associates Thunders to Top Award SAN LUIS OBISPO – The City of Paso Robles and Cannon Associates received high watermarks for the Thunderbird Wells Waterline project when they were honored with Public Works Project of the Year award from the American Public Works Association (APWA), Central Coast Chapter. The Thunderbird project involved using an innovative and time saving drilling technique to cross an 800-foot span of the Salinas River, an important consideration for a pipeline that carries the majority of Paso Robles’ drinking water.

In order to bring the Thunderbird Well Waterline across the Salinas River, Cannon Associates used the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technique, a low-impact method of installing pipelines across rivers. “HDD was the perfect solution for this project,” remarks Larry Kraemer, Project Manager. “There was very little disturbance to the river, riverbank and surrounding environment. We were also able to complete the project in three weeks,” he adds. “Our Mechanical Department has used this technology in the petroleum industry for years; it is nice to be able to use this expertise for a project in the municipal industry.” Generally, a project of this scale would take several months, which in itself can have an impact on the riverbank and surrounding environment.

Typically, HDD begins from both sides of a riverbank. A drill rig will drill a pilot hole under a river. Once the pilot hole reaches the other side, the hole is enlarged through successive reams coming back through the tunnel. When hole is large enough to fit pipes, they are also pulled through the hole following the reamer.

The APWA is an international educational and professional association of public agencies, private sector companies, and individuals dedicated to providing high quality public works goods and services. Each year, they present awards to the top local projects and engineering groups.

For nearly 30 years, Cannon Associates has been providing engineering, surveying, and planning services to clients throughout California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Arizona. CANNON TO DESIGN CAL POLY HOUSING
Local Company part of design team for latest Cal Poly Campus Housing project
    September 1, 2005

2,700-Bed Student Housing North Complex, San Luis Obispo, California SAN LUIS OBISPO - As design continues on the largest single construction project in the CSU system history, local engineering firm, Cannon Associates is right in the middle of this historic project. Cannon Associates is working with Clark Construction and Niles Bolton Architects to provide the civil engineering services for Cal Poly's Student Housing North Complex. Construction on the project may begin as early as Spring 2006.

Cannon Associates has been involved in numerous projects on the Cal Poly campus including the most recent 800-unit Cerro Vista housing complex, the University Sports Complex, EDES South, the Housing Administration Building, and Engineering Building IV. "It's been fantastic for me as a Cal Poly graduate to watch the campus grow and change over the years. It's even a bigger thrill to actually be part of the team that makes those changes," remarks Mike Cannon, President, Cannon Associates.

When completed, the 2,700-unit housing complex will include three residential neighborhood areas on 30 acres north of Brizzolara Creek on the Cal Poly Campus. The complex includes two parking structures totaling 1,900 parking spaces, commercial areas with retail and food service space as well as a recreation center with a swimming pool. The apartment units will offer full kitchens, laundry areas, study areas, utilities including high-speed internet access, weekly cleaning service for kitchens and bathrooms, and trash collection. If the popularity of the Cerro Vista complex is an indication, student interest in living in the new housing project will be high when first phase opens in 2008.
